Programs

All programs are held at the University of California Center, located at 550 E. Shaw Avenue in Fresno (see map), on the second Tuesday of September, November, January, March, and May at 7:30 p.m. Programs usually end no later than 9:00 p.m.

All Fresno Audubon programs are open to the public.

September 8: The Kings River Conservancy

Jim Van Haun, Executive Director of the Kings River Conservancy. will introduce us to the work of the conservancy, whose mission is to foster community involvement in protecting and enhancing environmental values, enhance and control public access for recreation, educate the public on environmental values, preserve agricultural lands, and encourage sound public conservation practices along the Kings River corridor from Pine Flat Dam to Highway 99.

November 10: Rodney Olsen, "Avian Ecology of Oak Woodlands"

Biologist Rodney Olsen will present on the avian ecology of oak woodlands. In this exploration, we will discuss the importance of oak woodlands to bird reproduction, feeding, and migration. We will also explore current threats to oak woodland communities and local conservation efforts.

January 12: Jordan Wellwood, "Threats Facing California Birds"

Jordan Wellwood, Audubon California's Conservation Coordinator for the Central Valley & Sierra Nevada, will discuss the major threats that birds face in California and what Audubon is doing to protect the landscapes birds will need in order to thrive in the future. She will also share opportunities for local citizens to get involved and make a real difference in the community. Jordan holds a Bachelors in Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo in Canada; prior to joining Audubon California, she worked on conservation policy issues in Sacramento. Her responsibilities with Audubon California involve working with local chapters on a variety of conservation projects, as well as at the state level on Audubon's priority projects for the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada.

March 9: Ingrid Carmean & Madeleine Mitchell: Integrated Pest Management in Your Own Back Yard

Ingrid Carmean is a Board Certified Entomologist and an Ecowise certified IPM Practitioner. She has owned her own Pest Control Company since 1993 practicing IPM (Integrated Pest Management) in the Fresno area and serving mostly a variety of large governmental and institutional clients. For four years she was a trainer with the California Department of Pesticide Regulation's School IPM program. She is committed to promoting Integrated Pest Management through example and education particularly in the Fresno area. Ingrid will be presenting information on what are the causes of various pest infestations and how to avoid them, which pests actually need to be controlled, and which can be ignored or tolerated, and what to do when you have a problem and decide to control it. Madeleine Mitchell, a Master Gardener, will be presenting the second half of the session on IPM in your landscape.
